Gaslighter lets you browse Reddit posts from one subreddit while secretly replacing all of the images and videos with media pulled from entirely different subreddits. The result is a feed where familiar post titles are paired with unexpected visuals — a creative mash-up tool for entertainment and experimentation.

How it works

Gaslighter operates on two subreddit inputs:
  • Titles Subreddit — the subreddit whose post titles, authors, and metadata you want to display.
  • Media Subreddit(s) — one or more subreddits whose images and videos will replace the original media.
When you hit Gaslight!, the tool fetches posts from both sources, then randomly pairs each title-post with a piece of media from your media sources. The feed looks like a normal subreddit browse, but every image or video comes from somewhere else entirely.

Getting started

1

Choose a Titles Subreddit

Enter the subreddit you want to pull post titles from. This is a single subreddit — for example, news, worldnews, or AskReddit. The titles, authors, and scores from this subreddit will be displayed in your feed.
2

Choose Media Subreddit(s)

Enter one or more subreddits to pull replacement images and videos from. You can add multiple subreddits separated by commas — for example, cats, dogpictures, aww. The more media sources you add, the more variety you get.
3

Set a Replacement Name (optional)

If the titles from your Titles Subreddit contain names of people (detected automatically via capitalization and context), Gaslighter can swap those names with a name you provide. Enter a first name or full name in the Replacement Name field.
4

Configure sort and view options

Pick your preferred sort order and view layout (see sections below), then click the Gaslight! button to generate your feed.

Sort options

Control how posts from the Titles Subreddit are ordered:
SortDescription
HotCurrently trending posts (default)
NewMost recently posted
TopHighest-scoring posts for a given time window
When using Top sort, you can also choose a time window: Today, Week, Month, Year, or All Time.
The Media Subreddits always fetch using “Hot” sort for the best mix of recent, high-quality content.

View modes

Gaslighter offers three layout modes to control how your feed is displayed:
ModeDescription
CompactSmall grid tiles (2-5 columns). Great for scanning lots of content quickly. Titles overlay the bottom of each image.
LargeMedium grid tiles (1-4 columns). Instagram-style cards with the title displayed below each image. Default mode.
Extra Large (XL)Large cards (1-2 columns). Social-media style with prominent titles as captions beneath large images.

Autoscroll

Gaslighter includes a built-in autoscroll feature that continuously scrolls your feed at a configurable speed. A floating control widget appears in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
1

Enable autoscroll

Toggle the Autoscroll switch in the floating widget (bottom-right), or enable it before generating your feed from the controls panel.
2

Set your speed

Choose from three speed presets:
  • Slow — relaxed, hands-free browsing
  • Medium — comfortable reading pace
  • Fast — quick scanning through content
3

Pause and resume

Autoscroll automatically pauses when you:
  • Scroll manually (mouse wheel, touchpad, or touch)
  • Press arrow keys, Page Up/Down, or Spacebar
  • Open the media modal to view an image full-screen
It resumes automatically after 2.5 seconds of inactivity, or when you close the modal.
The floating autoscroll widget shows a Paused indicator when scrolling is temporarily stopped. You can also collapse the widget using the chevron button to save screen space.

Fullscreen media modal

Click any post card to open it in a fullscreen media viewer:
  • Desktop: Navigate with left/right arrow buttons, arrow keys, or click the edges of the screen. The post title is displayed prominently at the top. Press Escape to close.
  • Mobile: Swipe left/right to navigate between posts. Swipe down from the top to close. Double-tap to zoom into images, and pinch to zoom further (up to 4x). Tap anywhere to show/hide controls.
On desktop, double-click an image in the modal to toggle 2x zoom. Useful for inspecting details.

Quick actions

When you hover over a post card (or view it in the modal), quick-action buttons appear that let you:
  • Download the media directly
  • Send to Joip to use the image in other Joip tools (sessions, BabeCock, etc.)
  • Save to Vault to store the media in your personal Media Vault

Infinite scrolling

As you scroll through the feed (manually or via autoscroll), Gaslighter automatically loads more posts in the background. It uses an IntersectionObserver to detect when you are approaching the bottom of the feed and fetches the next batch of title posts, pairing them with fresh random media from your source pool.
When the pool of unused source media is exhausted, Gaslighter recycles previously used media to keep the feed flowing. Every title post still gets a random pairing, so the experience stays varied.

Settings persistence

All of your Gaslighter preferences are automatically saved to your browser’s local storage under the key gaslighter_user_settings. This includes:
  • Titles Subreddit and Media Subreddits
  • Replacement Name
  • View mode, sort mode, and time filter
  • Autoscroll enabled/disabled and speed
When you return to Gaslighter, your previous configuration is restored automatically — just click Gaslight! to regenerate the feed.

Name replacement

The Replacement Name feature uses intelligent name detection to find and replace person names in post titles:
  • Detects first-name + last-name pairs using capitalization patterns and contextual clues (honorifics like “Mr.”, “Dr.”, suffixes like “Jr.”, “III”)
  • Preserves the original casing style (UPPERCASE, Title Case, lowercase)
  • Supports hyphenated and apostrophe-containing names
  • Works best with news, celebrity, and political subreddits where full names appear frequently
Enter a first and last name (e.g., Jane Doe). Both the first and last names in detected pairs will be replaced.

Tips and creative ideas

  • News titles + cute animals: Use worldnews as titles and cats, aww, puppies as media for a wholesome mismatch.
  • Celebrity gossip + random photos: Pair a celebrity subreddit with EarthPorn, FoodPorn, CozyPlaces for absurd juxtapositions.
  • Sports titles + memes: Combine a sports subreddit with meme subreddits for comedic commentary.
Add 3-5 media subreddits for the best variety. Larger, more active subreddits provide more images to draw from. If media starts repeating, the pool will auto-recycle, but adding more sources reduces repetition.
Use Large or XL view mode with Slow autoscroll speed for a relaxed, lean-back experience. Compact mode with Fast speed works well for rapid scanning.
Choose a Titles Subreddit that frequently mentions people by full name — news, politics, and celebrity subreddits work best. The detection is conservative to avoid false positives, so common-noun titles won’t be affected.

FAQ

Not every Reddit post contains an image or video. Text-only posts and link posts without media previews will show a placeholder. This is normal — Gaslighter focuses on media-rich content.
The feed may stop if the Titles Subreddit runs out of posts for the selected sort and time filter. Try switching to a different sort mode or expanding the time window for “Top” posts.
Yes, but the result will look very similar to browsing that subreddit normally since the titles and media come from the same source. The tool is most interesting when the two sources are very different.
No. Gaslighter is a free tool that does not consume credits. It only fetches publicly available Reddit content.
Settings are stored in your browser’s local storage, not your account. They persist across sessions on the same browser but won’t follow you to a different device or browser.
